Turkish State Artist and
Pianist Meral Guneyman will dedicate her recital to Ilhan Mimaroglu
who is expected to be in attendance. Mimaroglu, the 82 year-old
musician internationally known for his compositions in which he
utilized electronics, is equally at home producing records for major
popular and jazz artists, including many who were signed to Atlantic
Records. As an executive and in-house producer for Atlantic he was
responsible for recordings of Charles Mingus, Modern Jazz Quartet,
John Cage, Eric Salzman, Luciano Berio, Idil Biret, Meral Guneyman,
Vladimir Ussachevsky. Janis Siegel, and many others. He also
collaborated with Jean DuBuffet on Coucou Bazar at the Guggenheim
museum. His own label, Finnadar, that specialized in contemporary
works, was highly respected for its innovative and important
recordings. Mr. Mimaroglu both studied and taught at Columbia
University, was active in the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music
Center and has lectured and written widely on music.
Meral Guneyman who has garnered first prize in some of the most
prestigious competitions in the world of piano playing including the
Buffalo Philharmonic's Young Artists Competition, The William Kapell
Competition, Naumburg Competition (finalist), Juilliard's Chopin
Competition and East West Artists' International Competition, will
perform works of Mimaroglu, and other works from her discography
that were produced by Mr. Mimaroglu, as well as works by Gershwin,
Ellington, and Hyman. She has concertised worldwide in her capacity
as Turkish State Artist. In addition to her work as a classical
musician, Ms. Guneyman transitions to the jazz genre and has
appeared frequently as part of a duo with jazz great, Dick Hyman,
with whom she collaborated on a highly praised recent CD, Playful
Virtuosity. Ms. Guneyman records
exclusively for the Ryko label (distributed by Warner/Elektra
Atlantic Corp.). Ms. Guneyman is a graduate of the Juilliard School.
Renowned vocalist, Janis Siegel (Manhattan Transfer) will make a
guest appearance, collaborating with Ms. Guneyman on Gershwin songs.
